NSE trading hours and holidays
The Nairobi Securities Exchange trades for five and a half hours a day, five days a week, and closes on Kenya's public holidays. This explainer sets out the sessions, the 2026 calendar, the rule for holidays that fall on a weekend, and how a closed day shifts settlement.

The trading day
| Time (EAT) | Session | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 9.00 to9.30 am | Pre-open | Orders are entered and an opening price is worked out from them. Nothing executes yet. |
| 9.30 am | Open | The matching engine opens and queued orders execute against each other at the opening price. |
| 9.30 am to3.00 pm | Continuous trading | Orders match as they arrive. This is the session your broker app shows. |
| 3.00 pm | Close | The session ends and closing prices are published. The close is the price on KenyaStocks. |
There is no lunch break and no after-hours session for retail investors. An order placed at 6 pm through an app is held by the broker and enters the book in the next pre-open. Times are East Africa Time, UTC+3, and Kenya does not change its clocks.
One rule from the August 2025 changes also shapes the day: any quantity of shares trades on the one main board, so single-share orders join the same queue as everyone else's. On a day when a share does not trade at all, the previous close carries over as its reference price.
When KenyaStocks updates
KenyaStocks is an end-of-day site. After the 3.00 pm close, Mansa Markets publishes the day's closing prices, NASI and volumes, and the site picks them up in the early evening. Every data view carries a small Close · date label so you can see which session a figure belongs to. During the session the prices here are the previous close, and the market status line tells you whether the exchange is currently open.
On a public holiday nothing changes: the close from the last trading day stays until the next session ends. A quiet Monday after a long weekend will therefore show Friday's date until Monday evening.
Public holidays in 2026
The exchange closes on every gazetted public holiday. Kenya has twelve, eight on fixed dates and four that move: Good Friday and Easter Monday follow Easter, and the two Eid holidays follow the sighting of the moon and are gazetted a few days ahead. The 2026 dates below are from Office Holidays; the Eid dates are the gazetted ones for this year.
| Date | Day | Holiday | Exchange |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January | Thursday | New Year's Day | Closed |
| 20 March | Friday | Idd-ul-Fitr | Closed |
| 3 April | Friday | Good Friday | Closed |
| 6 April | Monday | Easter Monday | Closed |
| 1 May | Friday | Labour Day | Closed |
| 27 May | Wednesday | Idd-ul-Azha | Closed |
| 1 June | Monday | Madaraka Day | Closed |
| 10 October | Saturday | Mazingira Day | Weekend anyway |
| 20 October | Tuesday | Mashujaa Day | Closed |
| 12 December | Saturday | Jamhuri Day | Weekend anyway |
| 25 December | Friday | Christmas Day | Closed |
| 26 December | Saturday | Boxing Day | Weekend anyway |
The government occasionally gazettes an extra one-off holiday at short notice, for example for a national event. On those days the exchange also closes, and the close date on KenyaStocks simply stays put.

The Sunday rule
Under Kenya's Public Holidays Act, when a public holiday falls on a Sunday the following Monday is observed as the holiday, and the exchange closes on that Monday. A holiday that falls on a Saturday does not move. In 2026 three holidays land on Saturdays (Mazingira Day, Jamhuri Day and Boxing Day) and none on a Sunday, so there are no substitute Mondays this year. In 2027 Jamhuri Day falls on a Sunday, so Monday 13 December 2027 will be a closed day.
What a holiday does to settlement
The NSE settles on T+3 in working days. Weekends and public holidays do not count, so a holiday inside the window pushes settlement out by a day. A share bought on Thursday 2 April 2026 would normally settle on Tuesday 7 April; with Good Friday and Easter Monday closed, it settles on Thursday 9 April. The same applies to money from a sale.
This matters most around dividend book closures. To be on the register on a book closure date you need the purchase to have settled, so the last day to buy is three working days earlier, and a holiday in between moves that day back too. The arithmetic is in How dividends work in Kenya.
The session in other time zones
For Kenyans abroad the session sits in the morning or the small hours. Kenya stays on UTC+3 all year, so the shift changes when the other country moves its clocks.
| Where you are | 9.30 am to3.00 pm EAT is |
|---|---|
| London (BST, summer) | 7.30 am to1.00 pm |
| London (GMT, winter) | 6.30 am to12.00 pm |
| Dubai (GST) | 10.30 am to4.00 pm |
| New York (EDT, summer) | 2.30 am to8.00 am |
| New York (EST, winter) | 1.30 am to7.00 am |
| Johannesburg (SAST) | 8.30 am to2.00 pm |
Most broker apps accept orders outside the session and queue them for the next pre-open, so trading from another time zone does not require being awake at 9.30 am Nairobi time. The diaspora path is in Buying NSE shares from abroad.

Common questions
Does the NSE open on Saturday?
No. Trading is Monday to Friday only, 9.30 am to 3.00 pm after a 9.00 am pre-open, and the exchange closes on public holidays.
Why does KenyaStocks still show Friday's date on Monday afternoon?
Prices update once a day after the 3.00 pm close. Until Monday's session has closed and been published, the latest close is Friday's, and the label says so.
If a holiday falls on a Saturday, is Monday off?
No. Only a holiday on a Sunday moves to the following Monday. Saturday holidays are not made up.
